GARMENT GUTS: THE INNER WORKINGS OF CLOTHES
June 24 - September 9, 2023
Did you think about the inside of your shirt when you put it on today? Or perhaps the bottom of it unraveled and you were forced to figure out why. The “guts” or insides of our garments can tell a fascinating story of construction, design, and fashion history.
Come explore the “guts” of special items from our textiles collection, dating from the 1830s to the 1930s. Many of these items have not been displayed before due to their delicate condition. Each illustrates the technology, beauty ideals, and economics of their time. They also reveal more personal stories with their embellishments, careful mending, and alterations.
The special exhibit is in the second floor gallery and is included with a paid admission to The Avery House.
