Historic Homes Feature: Charming & elegant single-story 1908 Folk National

The Meyer House, 1908
Style: Folk National

Jan and Gene Meyer’s home on historic Smith Street is a charming and elegant example of a single-story, Folk National style with its hip roof, front gable and a cozy, covered front porch. The Meyers purchased the home, originally built in 1908, after relocating from Kansas in 2004. They have painstakingly worked to preserve its historic character and bring it to its present superb condition.

When the Meyers purchased the home, it was a 978-square-foot, two-bedroom home with a small enclosed back porch. The Meyers replaced the back porch with a beautiful master bedroom suite and a laundry room, while faithfully restoring the rest of the home to its original design. The living and dining rooms retain much of their architectural profile with ten-foot ceilings and original windows and doors, while the kitchen and interior details have been adapted to meet the needs of a modern family. The home still has much of the original pine flooring, leaded windows, and Japanned hardware on the doors. The built-in cabinet just inside the entrance is thought to be original. The kitchen was renovated in April 2017, but retains the original pine beadboard pantry. The house is filled with family antiques – the marble-topped buffet and mirror in the dining room were brought west in a covered wagon and belonged to Jan’s great-grandfather.

The Meyers have re-landscaped the property with many plants and artifacts from their Kansas life. They also enjoy their wonderful Lee Mac 1972 Vintage camper that sits in the driveway, which will be available to tour during the Historic Homes Tour.
